Z-Enology was incorporated when it acquired a wine patent application and a worldwide exclusive license from Miragene, Inc. a California Biotechnology Company, to use its proprietary technology for applications in the wine industry.

Miragene has invested more than $1.5M in research and development to invent and test its proprietary Z-Grip™ biochip for studying a variety of protein interactions. It is the only biochip capable of binding whole cells and has the highest binding capacity of any commercial biochip. These properties make the Z-Grip™ biochip the ideal platform for detecting live cells of contaminating wild yeasts that can destroy wine.

Z-Enology has conducted thousands of tests on wine with the Z-Grip™ biochip and cooperated with both academic institutes and commercial wineries to further validate the utility of its Z-Wine Assay™. </p>

As a result of collaborations with the enology departments of California State University Fresno, UC Davis and Constellation Wines US, Z-Enology has introduced to the market the world's first immunoassay - the Z-Brett Assay™ - for the detection of the spoilage microorganism Brettanomyces.
